As regulations surrounding packaging waste and recyclability continue to become more stringent worldwide, beverage brands are increasingly evaluating label materials from a full packaging-lifecycle perspective. Within the PET bottle recycling stream, BOPP wrap-around labels offer excellent compatibility with established recycling processes due to their low density and favorable separation characteristics.
1. The Science Behind Float-Sink Separation
During industrial PET recycling, used PET bottles are typically shredded, washed, and sorted into different material streams. Float-sink separation relies on the differences in density between various plastic materials to separate labels from PET flakes.
PET flakes: Density of approximately 1.38 g/cm³, which is higher than the density of water, causing PET to sink.
BOPP labels: Typically have a density of around 0.90–0.91 g/cm³, which is lower than the density of water, allowing BOPP to float.
Because PET and BOPP have significantly different densities, BOPP labels can be effectively separated from PET flakes during washing and float-sink processing. The floating BOPP material can then be collected by the recycling system, helping minimize the amount of label material remaining in the PET flake stream.
This density-based separation characteristic allows BOPP wrap-around labels to work well with existing PET recycling processes and can help maintain the purity of recycled PET (rPET) feedstock.
2. Lower Adhesive Usage, Reduced Risk of Contamination
Compared with conventional pressure-sensitive labels, BOPP roll-fed wrap-around labels generally require only a small amount of adhesive at the overlap area to secure the label, rather than applying adhesive across the entire back surface.
This can reduce the potential contamination associated with adhesive residues during the recycling process and may also reduce the processing burden during washing and separation.
When properly designed with suitable films, printing inks, and adhesives, BOPP wrap-around labels can provide good compatibility with PET bottle recycling systems and contribute to cleaner and more consistent rPET feedstock.
3. BOPP Labels Supporting the Circular Economy
Choosing a label material with good recycling compatibility allows brands to achieve the required packaging appearance, high-quality printing, and product identification while also considering the end-of-life stage of the package.
By combining low-density BOPP film, limited adhesive application, and compatibility with PET recycling processes, BOPP wrap-around labels can help reduce the potential impact of labels on the PET recycling stream and support the transition from a "single-use" packaging model toward a more circular recycle-and-reuse system.
BOPP wrap-around labels are more than a high-performance labeling material—they are a practical solution for recyclable packaging and the circular economy.
